The world of surfing and entertainment mourns the sudden and tragic loss of Tamayo Perry, a beloved figure known for his roles in films like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush . Perry, 49, passed away on Sunday after being fatally injured in what is suspected to be a shark attack off Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii.

A Respected Waterman and Lifeguard

Tamayo Perry was more than just an actor—he was a respected lifeguard, surf instructor, and pillar of the North Shore community. Having served with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years, Perry dedicated his life to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike. In a statement, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of such a devoted public servant.

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our incredibly dedicated City and County of Honolulu lifeguards,” Blangiardi said. “His heroic actions and tireless efforts to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors will never be forgotten.”

Perry’s commitment to protecting others made him a revered figure among colleagues and the broader community. His bravery and sense of duty were hallmarks of his character, traits that defined both his personal and professional life.

The Tragic Incident

On June 23, just before 1 p.m. local time, emergency services received a call reporting a surfer suffering from multiple bite wounds near Goat Island. Lifeguards quickly sprang into action, bringing Perry ashore using a Jet Ski. Despite their best efforts, paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Acting Chief Kurt Lager of Honolulu Ocean Safety described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all” during a press conference. Emilia Perry, Tamayo’s wife and fellow surfer, shared heartfelt words about her husband’s passion for the ocean.

“Tragic though his passing may be, he left this world doing what he loved, where he loved to do it,” she said.

 

A Life Dedicated to Surfing and Community

Tamayo Perry was renowned for his mastery at Pipeline, one of the most iconic surf breaks in the world, located off Ehukai Beach Park on Oahu’s north side. According to Surfer Magazine , Perry was close friends with singer Jack Johnson and was born and raised on Oahu’s east side. Together with his wife, he ran a surf school on the North Shore, sharing his expertise and love for the waves with aspiring surfers.

News of Perry’s death sent shockwaves through the surfing and entertainment communities. Legendary surfer Kelly Slater paid tribute to his friend, writing:

“This one is hard to believe… You truly lived the life you loved.”
